Personal History

It started in Ponce, Puerto Rico 1972...Every child spends time playing outside, but this was not an possible for Fabio. From birth the Fabio suffered from asthma so terrible that several times a week he needed allergy shots to prevent severe asthma from consuming him. Many days and weeks spent on the family sofa surrounded by art supplies given to him by his mother. An artist herself, she realized that creating art came much easier to her son than it did to her. So, when he was unable to go outside she felt the urge to supply his creative side with all the tools needed to flourish and grow as an artist.

When Fabio got to High School he acknowledges that he did “just enough to get by.” He had his sights set on a scholarship to an Art School but ended up losing out because he didn’t graduate. In that moment of devastation and embarrassment Fabio devoted himself to his art and completing school. After a few years of youthful pursuits he entered music school.

This move took him away from his family but introduced him to a man that would help shape his future. Fabio recalls, “Music is a beautiful thing but not what I deeply wanted.” Answering an ad for an artist to work with stained glass proved to feed into his hunger. Blaise Botti was a Master in the art of stained glass and welcomed Napoleoni into his world. He took him under his wing and taught him everything about the business. In his 5 years with Blaise, he and Napoleoni accomplished what only a few have done… they landed the cover of the Smithsonian Gift Catalog twice!

Art Rooted in Emotions

A lot of  events shaped Fabio's artwork but none more than the inspiring events that followed the birth of his child. His daughter, born with heart abnormalities, she faced several surgeries to repair issues that could have prevent her from a future. Frustrated with his daughters issues and surrounded by feelings of a  sea of sorrow from other parents in the same situation, Fabio grew. While his wife and daughter slept, Fabio walked the Hospital corridors of the children's care unit looking for a space to sketch out his personal feelings and overwhelming emotions. From these thoughts a new forms of creativity was born within the artists works. The doors to Fabio Napoleoni heart opened to express in art works for the world to experience.

Style & Influence

It took a dramatic experience for Fabio to realize what he was lacking in his work- emotion and feeling. He had all the elements to create great art but none that inspired the soul. With this new realization and older sketches in hand, Fabio added the last ingredient of inspiration and feelings needed...Emotional Experience born of Life twists and turns. Fabio says it perfectly, “I am inspired only by a few but admire them all for the hard work that is devoted to any art so deeply desired by the soul.”

With a vibrant and bold use of colors along with many of his characters, Fabio has had  created emotional value to his art that had been there previously. His paintings would have many titles, and every one would fit the image created. But one thing is for certain, you will always find a beautiful heart and emotions in every piece of his work. A symbol of his love for his daughter...she lives now and will forever in his art.  Symbolism is prominent within Fabio’s body of work. Trees, hearts and emotionally based characters usually grace any given piece.

Fabio’s admiration for trees goes back to his high school days. As his talent became more honed, the images of trees grew in detail. “I’m fascinated with trees because they represent longevity, life, shelter, a source of food, that old wise man and strength,” says Fabio. All of these qualities are present in each tree represented in every masterfully drawn piece. Adding a simple red heart to a black and white tree created a movement towards an emotional expression that was totally unexpected but embraced by those viewing and purchasing Fabio’s pieces

Fabio Napoleoni characters are present throughout his artwork. The primary persona in Fabio’s art is Marcinevo: a lovable, ragtag, well–loved childhood figure with mitten hands and a one button eye who has drawn on the walls of his cardboard box to create a world of his own. On the walls of this box Marcinevo takes journeys, ages, experiences life and freedom as well as loves and losses/ happiness and sorrow.
