The most profound transformation came in 2004. After years of hoping for a second child, Fabio and his wife, Nikki, learned during pregnancy that their daughter Lauren had a serious heart abnormality. Months and years of medical treatment followed. During long nights at Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, Fabio drew, wrote, and formed bonds with other parents and the hospital staff. Creating became a way to process fear, helplessness, gratitude, and hope.
