Michael Godard
"This is a classic poker piece with a twist. The heart has been left out of the King of Hearts card. The inspiration for this was a program I saw on the Discovery Channel about Nero, the emperor who let Rome burn down. The king is always the guy without a heart because he has to rule, so I decided to paint a king without a heart. If you looked below the “K” on the card, there was no heart. I had received so many complaints about the missing heart that I put it back in—every king in every other piece has a heart. If you follow the smoke from the cigar, it circles and swirls around the cards, then leads you back to the chips. The chips are arranged in a way that brings you back to the cigar, so it’s kind of a circular path." ~ Michael Godard
