About the painting

Twice a year, for the last 20 years, Thomas Arvid has painted live at the Silver Oak Cellars Release Day Party at their gorgeous winery in Napa Valley. “Opening Day” is a tribute to that festive celebration. Fooling the eye with his incredible precision and impeccable application, Arvid makes us question if the painting is painted on crate or canvas. The clarity and transparency in the shimmering green bottle and the masterful and modern composition illustrate why Arvid is “America’s Preeminent Painter of Wine.” And he reminds us that when you share fine wine with great friends, it makes everyday feel like “Opening Day.”

In addition to painting the wines of Napa, Arvid has been soaked in the culture of the Valley for several decades. He has participated in all the steps of crafting a fine wine, from helping at harvest, blending wines, and even assisting with the bottling and boxing of the vintages. Arvid likens the process of making a fine wine to the process of creating a masterpiece on canvas: “You start with the raw materials, you have a vision, and you layer and layer the steps to come up with the final composition. Only with winemaking, you have a much more constrained palette to work with because you can only use the colors God gives you in any given season.”
